ABOUT THE COURSE

Figure drawing is an essential discipline rooted in refining observation, studying proportional relationships, and cultivating an understanding of form, light, and movement. Among the most captivating mediums in this pursuit is sanguine—a material employed for centuries by artists such as Michelangelo to capture the warmth and vitality of the human form.

This three-day workshop will explore the core principles underpinning the use of sanguine in figure drawing, focusing on its role in both sketches and refined figure drawings. We will examine the essential qualities that make a figure drawing successful, including varied line quality, dynamic symmetry, expressive gesture, and the sculptural understanding of light and shadow.

Students will work from a live model, progressing from gesture studies to fully realised drawings with the option to work with sanguine and white chalk on toned paper.

Emphasis will be placed on proportion, anatomy, and a sensitivity to the unique qualities of sanguine as a medium. By the end of the workshop, students will have achieved a greater technical proficiency and developed a deeper understanding of the expressive power that sanguine brings to figure drawing.
