ABOUT THIS COURSE
Colourful Portrait Painting in Oils
Monday 10th to Thursday 13th March 2025
Increase the vibrancy of your colours – and the looseness of your mark-making – whilst also learning the importance of light and shade!
The main aim of this four-day workshop is to develop your understanding of painting a portrait using the medium of oils. You will complete a number of studies which will improve your ability to draw – and paint – from a live model. You will take part in exercises that boost your skills in:
- accurately matching tonal values
- communicating with looser, more suggestive marks
- pushing the range of saturated hues
Although it is essential for attendees to have a good level of observational drawing skills, this course is suitable for those who are beginners as well as those who have a little more experience. You will be provided with tutorials demonstrations, group lessons and critiques, as well as individual one-to-one support throughout
ABOUT JANE FRENCH
Based in Leicester (UK), Jane French is an accomplished figurative artist and portrait painter. Having originally studied Fine Art at Newcastle University, and later an MA in Design at De Montfort University, Jane worked as an illustrator and graphic designer before focusing professionally on her own practice. She is also an art and design tutor, working online and at art centres and FE/HE institutions in the UK and Europe. In 2021 she was selected to appear in Sky Arts ‘Portrait Artist of the Year’ and, in 2022, Jane worked on a personal project during which she painted 100 Portraits. She has had work selected for the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and for the Royal Society of Oil Painters and she is a proud member of the Contemporary British Portrait Painters collective (CBPP) – a group of some of the best portrait artists working in Britain today.
This class is limited to 10 students.
